Stuart Gerald Eardley Wilmot, known by his second name, was the eldest son of Stuart Eardley Wilmot (1847-1932) and his wife Rosa Cornelia Johnstone (1846-1924). Gerald was born at his parents' residence in Lyttleton Street, Launceston, on 14 Dec 1874. He was educated at the Church of England Grammar School at Geelong. He joined the staff of Messrs Dalgety and Co. Ltd, Sydney, in 1894, and remained there five years before returning to Launceston to enter the family firm of Johnstone and Wilmot.
On 7 Jan 1902 at the Holy Trinity Church, Launceston, Gerald married Vera Constance Walker, the younger daughter of Charles Augustus and Catherine Walker. They had one son Stuart, who was born on 4 Aug 1907. Gerald was a prominent golfer and rower. He was one of Sydney's leading oarsman when he was residing in NSW. Gerald died aged 35 at his residence 'Wyuna', 16 Lyttleton Street, of pneumonia and gastro-enteritis on 12 Nov 1909. He left a young widow and a two-year-old son. A plaque in his memory was erected at St John's Church.
