Herbert Upton Wilkinson was the son of William George Wilkinson (1849-1919) and his wife Caroline Morris (1850-1935). Herbert attended the Launceston High School in Frederick Street from 1893. He was a printer in the family business of W G Wilkinson at 63 Paterson Street, Launceston. When his father retired in 1914, Herbert took over the management of the company until 1925 when his brother William was the head of the firm. Herbert married Lily Caroline White on 17 April 1911 at St John's Church in Launceston.
He was initiated into St Andrew's Lodge in 1902, and he became a Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Tasmania. He was a foundation member of the Old Grammarians and Tamar Valley Lodges, and held high office in the Royal Arch and other orders. Herbert was also a trustee of the Masonic Hall and took a keen interest in the proposed Masonic peace memorial, particularly advocating homes for the aged and for widows. He and his wife lived at 33 Lanoma Street for many years. Herbert died suddenly on 22 May 1946. See The Examiner 14 Apr 2007, page 42.
