George Whitelaw was born on 6 Nov 1860 in Launceston, the fifth of twelve children of James Whitelaw (1820-1912) and Elizabeth Chamberlain Thompson (1831-1919). His paternal grandparents were Andrew Whitelaw (born 1780 in Scotland) and Anne Willoughby (born 1789 in Ireland). His maternal grandparents were Robert Thompson and Mary Chamberlain.
George never married. He was a clerk and photographer's assistant. In 1891 he sang in the bass section of the Exhibition Choir. In 1903 he travelled to Ireland where he stayed with relatives on the Willoughby side of the family at Coolcullen with whom he had maintained correspondence which his father had initiated. The family history went back many years to Scotland and Ireland and he was obviously interested in tracking it. George died in Launceston on 26 Nov 1946 and was buried at Carr Villa in site C7 No 13. George's brother Percy and nephew Edgar Whitelaw are also pictured in this album.
