Mrs Kate McCarthy Weston was born on 20 Jan 1846, the third daughter of Alexander Clerke (1804-1877), MLA, of 'Mountford', Longford, and his wife Frances Gertrude Sweetnam (1805-1881). Kate was christened at Christ Church, Longford, on 18 Jun 1846. Her father was described as a settler at the time. Kate Clerke married Edward Weston of 'Maitland', Longford, on 18 Jan 1865 at Christ Church. Edward was a son of W P Weston of 'Hythe'.
Their seven children were all born at Longford between Jun 1867 and Jun 1877. The eldest, also named Edward, and the fourth child, Arthur, died as babies. The youngest was born after the death of his father. Edward was MLC for Longford from 1872 until his death in his 46th year which resulted from a fall from his wagonette on 14 Feb 1877. Kate was with him when one of the two horses shied coming down the hill by 'Mountford'. Edward was thrown onto the road from the elevated driver's seat and died later at 'Hythe', the family home.
Kate became a Baptist in the 1880s. She sold or let 'Hythe' and moved to 'Altmor', 60 High Street, Launceston. Four of her children and younger sister Aphra Archer are pictured in the Family Album. Kate died aged 53 in Sydney after surgery for cancer on 25 Jun 1899.
