Lavinia Wallace was the daughter of Andrew Butchart, a grocer, and his wife Jane Elizabeth Clarke. She was christened 5 Nov 1848 in Manchester, England. Lavinia married Alex Wallace on 24 Sep 1868 at Newcastle on Tyne. The couple had their first two children in England. In March 1872 Alex sailed for Melbourne. Lavinia and the children followed on the Agamemnon on 6 Aug 1872. A daughter was born during the voyage, but died three weeks later in Carlton. Their second son Alexander was born in Carlton, and after the family moved to Launceston in 1875 James was born, but only lived for eight months. George was born in 1877, Jessie died at five months, and Roy, the youngest, was born in 1885. Lavinia was an alto in the Exhibition Choir. The family moved back to Melbourne in 1892.
