Ellen Stokes was born about 1831 in Dunmow, Essex, England, to estate agent Charles Smith and Louisa. She had five younger brothers and sisters. Ellen married George C Leach, tailor, on 17 May 1862 at Whiteshill by Stroud, Gloucester and had one son Laurance in 1865.
Ellen migrated to Launceston, Tasmania. As a widow, she married William Stokes, storekeeper, on 6 Jan 1876 at the home of George Baker, Wellington Street. William had seven children ranging in age from eight to 19 years. Three are pictured in this Album. Ellen was an alto in the Exhibition Choir. She died on 27 Jul 1896 aged 67 of cardiac failure and dropsy at 77 Cameron Street. She was probably buried at the Charles Street Cemetery as her husband was interred there ten years later.
