Annie Maud Stephens was born in Launceston on 4 Jan 1868, one of nine children of Joseph Stephens and Louisa Caroline Markham who were married in Launceston on 11 Nov 1859. Miss Annie Stephens was a soprano in the Tasmanian Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. Annie married George Henry Cleaver on 11 Oct 1911. The couple had one son, Maxwell George, born on 21 Mar 1913.

George Henry Cleaver was the founder of The Cleavers Pty Ltd, ironmongers, in Charles Street and later became managing director for 44 years. He founded the business after buying it from Mr JS Scarr in 1904.

Max Cleaver also became managing director of Cleavers and was an alderman (1969-1984) and mayor (1978-79) of Launceston.

Annie Maud Cleaver died on 2 Jun 1947 and was buried at Carr Villa.
