Captain Richard Henry Sleeman was born on 7 Jul 1828 in Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon, England, a son of Richard and Susan Sleeman. He had a distinguished career as an engineer in the Royal Navy and was a resident of Launceston, Tasmania, from about 1887. He married Louisa Drewcatt on 1 Jan 1856 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. They had at least five children: a son HR Sleeman, and four daughters who married in Launceston. Captain Sleeman was a prominent member of the Launceston Benevolent Society and a district justice of the peace from 1895. He died while visiting London in Jun 1902. His widow Louisa died aged 68 on 16 Feb 1906 at her residence, 2 Claremont Street, Launceston.
