Grace Spurge was a student at the Launceston Training College at the time of the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. She contributed to the vocal and instrumental performance at the annual prize giving for the College on 17 Dec 1891. She also won prizes in English and music.
Grace was most likely a daughter of William James Spurge. He was in partnership with Robert R Marshall as manufacturers, general commission and indent agents, with premises in Cameron Street, Launceston, and Devonport. John and WJ Spurge were also storekeepers and produce merchants in Zeehan.
In 1903 William James Spurge was an agent in Carnarvon Street, Broome, Western Australia. This portrait is possibly the Grace L Spurge who married Truman Barber in Perth, Western Australia, in 1918.
