Robert Norman Smith was born on 31 Oct 1862, the third son of Charles Henry Smith (1827-1904) and his wife Miriam Dowle (c.1828-1911). He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School from 1875 to 1880. He worked as a jackaroo at 'Parknook', Cressy, and later went into partnership with Mr Lovell at 'Drysdale', Port Sorell. He was also involved with his father's business of Chas Smith and Co.
Norman married Muriel Matilda Johnstone on 25 Oct 1900 at St John's Church, Launceston. They lived at 'Narangil', 107 Elphin Road following their marriage. Their seven children, born between 1902 and 1916, all had the second name of Carington. In 1911 the family moved to 'Beulah' and also had a small apple orchard at 'Tretyre', Gravelly Beach. Norman became managing director of CH Smith and Co. in 1927 and retired in 1934. He and his wife moved to the old rectory at Perth in 1936, where they ran a few sheep and tended the large garden. Norman died on 6 Jul 1951 in his 89th year. Muriel moved back to Launceston and died on 12 Sep 1955. See The Examiner 26 May 2007, page 31.
