James Thomas Henry Smallhorn was born in Launceston on 11 May 1869, the only son of Thomas Henry Smallhorn (1839-1893) and Phoebe Hughes who were married in 1864. He had five sisters: Emily Adeline, Julia Mary, Ada Alice, Ethel Amy and Beatrice Flora. He married 20-year-old Henrietta Esther Seelig in Launceston on 8 Jun 1893. They had two daughters: Joyce Henrietta born on 26 Mar 1894 and Mavis Brenda born on 30 May 1897. James was appointed as a clerk in the Post Office Department at Launceston in May 1884. He died on 12 Feb 1946 at Cambridge, Tasmania, and was buried at the Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
