Andrew William (Bill) Shields was born in Launceston on 30 Aug 1865, the sixth child of George Shields (1828-1901) and his wife Isabella Buchan Mowatt (1833-1902). He was a storeman and later a seed and produce merchant.
At Invermay on 25 Mar 1888 Bill married Catherine Nicholson, who is believed to have been a maid in the family home. Their three children were born in Launceston: Andrew William in 1888; Audley Colin in 1898; and Keith Mowatt in 1899. The family moved to Melbourne about 1904 after Bill's business failed. They bought a new house in Boyd Street, Albert Park, where they lived until Catherine died in 1936. Bill worked as a produce salesman and clerk. He died at Box Hill in 1944 aged 80 years.
