John Shields was born in Launceston on 7 May 1862, the fifth child of George Shields (1828-1901) and his wife Isabella Buchan Mowatt (1833-1902). He was a blacksmith when he married Euphemia Thomson on 14 Mar 1892 in Launceston. They had three daughters. Later John became a fuel and produce merchant. Euphemia died aged 49 on 2 Sep 1915 at their residence, 49 Wellington Street. John moved to Sydney and married a second time, to Edith Rachel Tollis in 1921. He died suddenly at his residence, 21 Holborrow Street, Croydon, NSW, on 4 Mar 1943. See The Examiner 9 Dec 2006, page 38.
