Colin John Shields was born on 20 Nov 1874, the seventh child of George Shields (1828-1901) and his wife Isabella Buchan Mowatt (1833-1902). He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School and was a prominent oarsman, rowing with the Tamar Club. Colin had an interest in the timber milling industry and was a business adviser to a number of companies. He was elected a Launceston City Council alderman after his brother George's death in 1933. He married Margaret Katherine (Kitty) Dean on 30 Mar 1903 in Launceston. Their daughter, Dulcie Buchan, was born on 29 Dec 1903. See The Examiner 9 Dec 2006, page 38.
