Audley Shields was born on 22 Jun 1878, the youngest of nine children born to George Shields (1828-1901) and his wife Isabella Buchan Mowatt (1833-1902). He attended the Launceston Church Grammar School and married Catherine Foster on 11 Jun 1903 at Mrs Healy's house in Hobart. He was a wireless guard on Flinders Island for four months before enlisting with the 15th Battalion of the AIF on 5 Jun 1915. He was transferred to the 47th Battalion in Mar 1916 and served in Egypt and France before he was killed in action in Belgium about 9 Jun 1917. See The Examiner 9 Dec 2006, page 38.
