Mrs Mary Ann Shearn was born in Launceston on 23 Jun 1844, the second daughter of William Richards (1809-1872) and his wife Elizabeth Francis (1804-1884) of Tamar Street. On 15 Feb 1891 Mary Ann married Charles Henry Francis Shearn at the residence of the bride's uncle at St Leonards. Their only child Percy Charles was born on 14 Nov 1873, but died after an illness in Mar 1893 when he was only 19 years old. Charles and Percy are pictured in the Launceston Family Album.
Mary Ann exhibited needlework in the Tasmanian Exhibition and won a first award and two second places. She died five years after her husband on 23 May 1922 and was buried with him and her son at Carr Villa. Mary Ann left 2,700 pounds to the Launceston Church Grammar School in the memory of her son.
