Mrs Margaret Lyall Scott was born on 11 May 1854, the eldest of five children of William Lawson and his wife Mary Lyall of Bishopsbourne. Margaret Lawson married Samuel Jospeh Scott on 15 May 1880. Samuel, a farmer, was a son of George Scott and Alice Churnside Burns of 'Woodside', Hagley. Margaret and Samuel settled at 'Hawthorn', Hagley. They had three children: Mary was born on 25 Aug 1880 and the twins Louis and Mervyn were born on 19 Aug 1881. Mervyn died in 1888 when he was seven years old.
Margaret developed melancholia at the age of 42. She was admitted to the New Norfolk Asylum; the first of three visits was on 20 Oct 1896. Margaret died at the Asylum on 21 Mar 1899 aged 44. Her funeral was held at St Andrew's Church, Westbury.
