Margaret Josephine Santi, known as Josephine, was born on 4 Mar 1862, the second of three daughters of Francis Santi and his wife Sarah Margaret Martini (c.1835-1896), who were married in Launceston on 24 Nov 1857. Josephine's older sister Mary Louisa died aged 22 on 18 Sep 1882. Her younger sister Angelica Sara married Lawrence William Counsel in Feb 1897. Josephine's maternal grandparents were Antonio Martini, a colourful ex-convict and publican of the 'Sawyer's Arms' in Tamar Street, and Mary O'Mara. Josephine, a music teacher, was a soprano in the Exhibition Choir in 1891-92. She died as Margherita Josephine Winifred Santi on 20 Dec 1904, in Bourke Street, Launceston. The family attended the Church of Apostles.
