Kate Salter was born in Manchester, England, about 1860. She came to Australia with her sister Harriet shortly before the Tasmanian Exhibition in 1891-92. The sisters lived at 'Ibhar', 14 Bourke Street, Launceston. Kate married widower Gilbert Tennent McKinlay, draper, on 25 Apr 1913 at Dulwich Hill Baptist Church, Sydney.
Kate spent a short period in South Africa, where she was engaged in semi-missionary work. About two years before she died Kate went to England to visit relatives and was away about six months. She took a keen interest in benevolent work of different kinds. For many years she was a member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Wellington Street and took an active interest in the work of the church. Gilbert died on 12 Jul 1937 and Kate died aged 79 at a private hospital in Launceston on 27 Oct 1939. She was buried privately at Carr Villa. Gilbert, his first wife Annie and two children, George and Ella, are also in the Family Album.
