Mrs Maria Louisa Panton was born in Launceston on 22 Dec 1861 to William York and Louisa Dickenson who were married on 29 Nov 1852. She had four older siblings: Elizabeth, born in 1854; William, 1855; Frederick, 1857 and Henrietta, 1859. Maria York married Alderman Edward Henry Panton in Launceston on 31 Mar 1884 and was mayoress in 1899 and 1900. Edward was associated with sheep farming and mining and was a publican for over thirty years. In 1905 they moved to their newly-constructed home at 235 Charles Street, Launceston.
Maria's obituary in The Examiner states that 'In former years, Mrs. Panton took an active part in many organisations in Launceston and was an earnest Church of England Sunday school worker.' She died on 16 Aug 1940 in Launceston and was buried at Carr Villa Cemetery with her husband Edward who had died aged 94 on 5 Jun 1938.
