Stuart Gleadow Mackay was born on 12 Jun 1842, the fifth of six children born in Launceston to Hugh Rose Mackay and his wife Martha Kinleside Kirton. He was a prominent businessman, being employed in Sydney with Dalgety, Blackwood & Co., the predecessors of CH Smith & Co. He returned to Launceston and entered into parnership with DM Barnard, under the style of Barnard, Mackay and Co., wholesale grocers and wine and spirit merchants. After the firm was dissolved, Stuart became a director of the Mt Bischoff Tin Mining Co. In his younger days he was a member of the artillery corps.
Stuart married his first wife, 27-year-old Louisa Alice Whitmor Ryan, on 29 Dec 1880. Their son Stuart Gordon was born on 7 Jul 1883. Six months later Louisa died, on 12 Jan 1884, and her baby son followed just four days later. On 24 Jan 1887 Stuart married Isabel Geraldine Pennefather. They had a daughter Irene in 1888, but by 1903 Isabel had moved to NSW. Stuart died at the Launceston General Hospital on 2 Sep 1908, aged 65, after a lengthy illness. He was buried at the Cypress Street Cemetery. His wife Isabel is also pictured in the Family Album.
