James Louis (or Lewis) Maddox was the seventh child of Dr George Maddox (1815-1867) and his wife Emily Elizabeth Lakeland. He was born on 3 May 1853 and educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School from 1866. He married Mary Ann McAndrew on 10 Jun 1875 at St Paul's Church, Launceston. They had two sons and six daughters between 1876 and 1886. Mildred (1877-1882), Gwynneth (1878-1894) and Mary (1879-1882) all died young. Mary Ann died on 15 Aug 1887 at the age of 39. James was involved in various commercial businesses and at the time of his death was a mining and commission agent in partnership with his son Charles. He died at Mangana on 15 Jan 1897, leaving a large family. His son Charles, brother William and five of his children, sister Clara Maddox and niece Emily Cathcart are also in the Family Album.
