Ellen Maud (Nellie) Irvine was born in Launceston on 27 Sep 1861. She and her twin Robert were the youngest children of Charles James Irvine (1818-1863) and Jemima Frances Burn (1822-1919) who were married in 1843. Nellie was thirty at the time this portrait was taken. She married Harry Hawley on 1 Mar 1893 at the Holy Trinity Church, Launceston. The couple had eight attendants at the large wedding. After the reception at 'Lebrina' they travelled by George Collins' steam yacht to the Tamar Heads for their honeymoon.
Ellen and Harry had two children: Zoe in 1896 and Harry on 28 Sep 1898. Her husband Harry died aged 33 on 29 Apr 1898, five months before their son was born. Nellie lived at 'Ingleside' Evandale. Her mother died there in 1919. Nellie died on 16 Sep 1933 aged 72. She was buried with her husband, whose remains were moved to Carr Villa on 19 Oct 1933. They are in Section B3 No 38. Her mother and brother Richard are also in the Family Album.
