John Lionel Irvine was the youngest of three children of Richard Francis Irvine (1845-1921) and Frances Beatrice Lette (1857-1923). He attended the Launceston High School under E A Nathan and became a miner. He worked in various mining districts in Tasmania: in 1914 he was at Waratah, in 1928 he was at the Mt Lindsay mine at Renison Bell and by 1936 he was a prospector at Mathinna. John married Rhoda Marion Grundy on 8 Jul 1916 at George Town, but she died four months later on 6 Nov 1916. It appears that John may have been estranged from his family as he was not mentioned in his father's obituary when he died in Sep 1921. John died on 31 Dec 1950 aged 71 and was buried for free at Carr Villa in Section C4 No 412.
