Alice Mary Howell Holland was the elder daughter of Captain Henry Offspring Howell Holland and Kate McNie, who were married in Launceston on 6 May 1864. Alice was born in Bombay, India, on 16 Oct 1865 and christened in Calcutta on 17 Mar 1866. Her father was the master of the ship Welcome at the time, and later the Rohamany. Alice's sister Lily, born 1872, is also pictured in the Family Album. Her brother Henry was born in Aug 1875. Her mother died on 7 Jun 1876, soon after Alice turned 12.
At some stage the two girls, at least, came to Launceston, where it appears the family had friends or relatives. They were here in 1891-92 when Alice was an alto in the Tasmanian Exhibition Choir. In 1903 they were living at 179 St John Street, Launceston with George and Euphemia Baker, nee Craw, who had earlier adopted them. Six years later, on 7 May 1909 at Roodepoort, Transvaal, South Africa, Alice married Alexander Luke, from Durham, England.
