Edward Henry Hart was a son of John Hart (1826-1896) and Mary Ann Poole (1830-1876) who were married at Deloraine on 11 July 1859. One of nine children, he was educated at Deloraine Grammar School. His mother Mary Ann died at Deloraine on 22 Jul 1875 aged 45 years, just a week after giving birth to her ninth child who also died the following month. John, his father, died at Deloraine on 8 Sep 1896 aged 68.
Edward married Mary Whitelaw at Deloraine on 10 Aug 1893. They had two sons, though George, born 27 Feb 1894, died 26 Dec 1894. Oscar, born 22 Nov 1895, married Ivy Helen Shaw on 9 Nov 1921 and died 3 May 1980 in Launceston. Edward moved to Launceston as a young man where he was first employed by the draper George Allen. Later he worked with Augustus Simson a mining engineer and then he was employed by Alfred Field, an estate agent. He set up his own real estate business E H Hart and Company, many years later taking his son Oscar into partnership. Edward must have had a good voice as he was a member of the Exhibition Choir and sang with the choirs of St John's and St Paul's Churches. He was also an original member of the Launceston Operatic Society. Edward was an enthusiastic member of the ABC Bowling Club and a Director of the Equitable Building Society; in 1933-36 he was Chairman of the Board. He was instrumental in having the Trevallyn Town Board amalgamated with the Launceston City Council. He was taken ill suddenly and died at his home 'Stoke', 83 Elphin Road on 3 Jun 1936. Mary died 11 May 1942. Edward Hart was the grandfather of Mary Patricia Cameron, nee Hart, who was a botanist at the Queen Victoria Museum. See The Examiner 16 Dec 2006, page 39.
