Herbert Chawort Hallowes was the son of Brabazon Hallowes and Elinor Green and was born at Cilcain vicarage, near Mold in Flintshire, Wales. He was educated at Hailebury, Exeter College, Oxford and St George's Hospital, London. He first arrived in Australia in 1882. On 28 Mar 1883 he married Elizabeth Duncan Garroway in Kelvin, Glasgow City, Scotland. Elizabeth is also pictured in the Family Album.
Herbert was a consulting surgeon for the Launceston Hospital and surgeon to the Industrial School. All his children were born in Launceston between 1884 and 1897. The family moved to Ulverstone about 1898 where Herbert is listed as a medical practitioner. In Ulverstone the family home was 'Boskabel', South Road.
In 1907 he revisited England and while he was away his wife died of kidney disease on 8 Dec 1907. Herbert Hallowes died aged 55 at Cairns, Queensland, on 15 Aug 1912.
