Maurice Day Hales was the youngest of thirteen children of Archdeacon Francis Hales and his wife Anne Augusta Stoney. He was born in Launceston on 15 Dec 1873 and attended the Launceston Church Grammar School from 1883. He fought in the Boer War and died in Johannesburg, South Africa, on 24 Aug 1935. His name appears on a commemorative brass plaque in the LCGS Chapel. Maurice's father and two of his sisters Katherine and Mary are also pictured in the Family Album.
