Katherine Frances Hales, known as Kate, was the fourth of thirteen children of Archdeacon Francis Hales (1821-1900) and his wife Anne Augusta Stoney (c.1825-1887). Kate was born in Victoria in 1853, and came to Tasmania in that year with her family. Kate and her older sister Annie ran a girls' school from the family home in Lyttleton Street from 1885 to 1892. Some years later the house became the Broadland House School and is now part of the Launceston Church Grammar School. Kate died suddenly in her 78th year on 15 Apr 1931 in Sydney, NSW.
