Leonard Augustus Griffiths was born in Launceston on 29 Sep 1880, the eighth of thirteen children of Thomas Griffiths (1844-1891) and his wife Mary Sullivan (1847-1920). Only five of the children survived to adulthood. His older brother Lewis is also pictured in this album. His father, the manager of Scott & Griffiths' Tamar Brewery, had died just a few months before the photograph was taken.
In 1915 Leonard applied to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force, but was either rejected on medical grounds, discharged while still in training or served in Australia only. Before his marriage Leonard lived in George Street, Launceston, with his mother Mary and brother Lewis.
Leonard married Ila Aisbett MacDougall, a daughter of William Arthur MacDougall of King Island, on 5 Dec 1916 at 'Bleak House', Montpelier Road, Hobart. The marriage ceremony was performed by the Right Rev. Monsignor Gilleran. They had a daughter Patricia Mary Winifred at the Alexandra Hospital, Battery Point, on 26 Sep 1917. Their son Thomas Allason was born on 11 Jul 1919. Leonard was employed as a clerk and later as a canvasser. After the death of his mother in Jan 1920 Lewis lived with Leonard and his family at 27 Duke Street, Sandy Bay.
Leonard died aged 52 on 11 Oct 1932 at the Hobart General Hospital and was buried at Cornelian Bay. His wife Ila passed away aged 71 and was buried on 26 Sep 1960.
