Norman Stuart Gaunt was born in Launceston on 19 Nov 1874, the seventh child of Edward Gaunt (1837-1904) and Emily Ransom (1845-1921). Norman, an assayer, married Estella Rosina Fitzgerald on 14 Apr 1904 at the Church of the Guardian of the Angels, Avoca. They had four children. The eldest, Stuart, was born at 'Wathalimbah', Avoca on 11 Feb 1905. The family moved to the West Coast where Joan was born at Magnet on 24 Jul 1911. Their third child Geoffrey was born at Waratah on 26 Dec 1918 but died on 20 Jan 1921 when he was two years old. Just one month later Leigh was born on 21 Feb 1921.
The family moved to Launceston where Norman was employed as a clerk. They lived at 139 George Street, then in 1935 moved to 31 Trevallyn Terrace. By the late 1930s they resided at 132 Balfour Street and finally retired to Campbell Town in the early 1950s. Norman died on 11 Aug 1954 and was buried in St Luke's Anglican Cemetery, Campbell Town.
