James French was born in Launceston on 9 Jun 1871, the seventh child of James French (1833-1928) and his wife Sarah Bushby (1835-1902) of 'Havelock', Cataract Hill. On 20 Dec 1902, James married Mary Barrett and they had one daughter, Lalla, born on 18 Nov 1905. James was an importer but later joined the family business of builders. Mary died on 6 Feb 1934 aged 58 and was buried at Carr Villa F 253.

James married for a second time on 21 Apr 1938 to Miss Alma James in a quiet ceremony at the Church of England at Lindfield, Sydney. The couple returned to live at 'Havelock', Hill Street, Launceston. They later moved to Northbridge, Sydney, where James died in Sep 1968. Alma died in Oct 1973. His brothers Fred and Henry are also in the Family Album.
