William Alfred Fowler was born on 11 Apr 1860 in Launceston, Tasmania, the youngest of five children of Alfred Fowler and his wife Elizabeth Gilks. William was in partnership with his brother Alexander as a timber merchant. He married Susan Amelia Horton on 6 Sep 1894 at the Holy Trinity Church, Launceston. They had three sons and one daughter between 1896 and 1904. William's involvement in the community included being a Sunday school teacher and parish councillor for many years; one of the founders of the Court Sherwood Lodge; the United Friendly Society Dispensary and secretary of the Launceston Savings, Investment and Building Society.
William died aged 50 on 6 Dec 1910 at his residence 50 Charles Street, Launceston. He was buried at the Carr Villa Cemetery in Section B 39 with his wife Susan.
