Mary Emmeline Dodery was born in Launceston on 12 Jul 1876, the only daughter of William Henry Dodery (1847-1908), auctioneer, and his wife Ann Dunning (1847-1936). Mary was the granddaughter of the Hon. William Dodery, a prominent member of the Tasmanian Legislature.

Mary married Frederick Archer Gaunt on 6 Apr 1898. They had three daughters and one son. Hazel was born on 17 Mar 1899, Mollie in 1900, Ransom in 1904 and Nora on 17 Feb 1907. Her youngest child was seven years old when her husband joined up for the AIF in Aug 1914 and served in Gallipoli and France. Mary died on 3 Oct 1946 aged 70. Her ashes were interred at the Carr Villa Cemetery in the Western Wall 317B. Mary's older brother Clement and future husband are also in the Launceston Family Album.
