Mary Ritchie Dent was born at Westbury on 7 Feb 1869, the elder daughter of William Dent (born 1828) and Annie Downie Hall (c.1838-1920) who were married on 11 Apr 1868 at 'Mona Vale', Ross. Mary's sister Annie Dent is also pictured in the Family Album. They had a younger brother William Ritchie who died when he was six months old in 1878.

It appears that Mary's mother ran a boarding house in Cimitiere Street after the death of her husband. On 24 Jan 1895 Mary married Ernest Octavius Huxtable, the chief clerk for the Tasmanian Main Line Railway Company in Launceston. Ernest was the eighth child of Frederick and Harriett Huxtable of Low Head. They had three children: Athol, 1896; Ernest, 1898 and Trevor, 1905. Mary died on 21 Jul 1962 aged 93. She was buried at Carr Villa in Section D4 No. 437.
