Mrs Ann Grace Crane was born in Chippendale, Sydney, in 1863, a daughter of John and Elizabeth Hurst. Ann married Thomas Edward S Crane in 1886 at Woollahra, NSW. They had five children. The eldest, Anne Brooke, was born in 1888 in NSW. The family then moved to Launceston where Thomas took up the position as manager of Dempsters Store in Brisbane Street. The other four children were all born in Launceston: Edward, 23 Aug 1889; Thomas, 20 May 1891; John, 13 Mar 1893 - 7 Aug 1915 and Alice, 21 Jan 1895-1937.
By 1903 they had all moved to Llewellyn Street, Balmain, NSW, where Thomas was employed as a shopman. Ann and Thomas separated before 1915 when their son John enlisted in the 3rd Battalion and was killed at Lone Pine on the Gallipoli Peninsula. In 1936 Ann Grace was living with her daughter Alice in Strathfield, NSW. She died aged about 77 in 1940.
