Harold Robert Cox was born on 6 May 1870, the eighth child born to William Cox (1831-1908) and his wife Elizabeth Jordan (1830-1912) of Deloraine. He was educated at a church school in that town. He lived in Launceston all his adult life. With Oscar Webb, he established a firm of tailors and mercers under the name of Cox and Webb, carrying on business in Brisbane Street. In his youth he was a keen penny-farthing cyclist and also a rower. He was an active member of the Tamar Rowing Club, the East Launceston Bowling Club, the Commercial Travellers Association and the Northern Club. Harold was also a very good snooker and billiards player and a mason.
He married Florence Ann Taylor quite late in life, in 1929. He died at his residence 163 George Street on 28 Jan 1956 aged 85. He was privately cremated at Carr Villa. His sisters Emily and Ida and brother Oscar are also pictured in the Family Album. See The Examiner 7 Jan 2006, p. 24.
