John Johns Cowling was born in 1855 in Silverwell Cornwall. His parents were Richard Cowling and Susannah Johns. He sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne in the ship 'The Tiptree' with his parents and siblings, arriving in Melbourne on 9 Sep 1856.
He married Elizabeth Oats Wearne in 1881 in Victoria. Their five children were born in Launceston between 1882 and 1894. John was a carpenter; he built houses and may have been involved on the construction of the bandstand in the Cataract Gorge. He also took painting lessons in Launceston and examples of his work are still held by his descendants. The depression of the 1890s prompted his decision to move to Victoria. John and Elizabeth later lived at Laanecoorie, Wimmera and Bendigo in Victoria. John died in Maldon aged 78 on 24 January1934.
