Mrs Louisa Martha Coutts was born on 11 Jan 1853 in Islington, London, England, the fourth daughter of James Manning and his wife Elizabeth Williams. Louisa emigrated to Melbourne in 1868 and became a teacher. She married George Coutts on 8 Oct 1874 at Chalmers Manse, East Melbourne, Victoria. Their first three children were born in Melbourne between 1876 and 1881. The family moved to Launceston about 1883 where five children were born. Tragically four of the children died in Tasmania and were buried in the Charles Street General Cemetery. These were: Victor Percy in 1888; Victor Albert, 1890; William, 1901 and Florence, 1904.
While in Launceston, George ran his business, the Edinburgh Boot Warehouse, at 88-90 Brisbane Street. By 1895 the family had moved from Cameron Street to 'Westbank', 95 Invermay Road, Inveresk. The family returned to Victoria about 1907. Louisa separated from George when, on her return from a trip to England, she discovered that he had a mistress. She died in Armadale, Victoria, in 1919 aged 66. Only two of Louisa's children, Rhoda and Arthur, married and had children, all in New Zealand. George is also pictured in the Family Album.
