Mary Alice Collins, known by her second name, was born in Launceston on 30 Jul 1876, the seventh child of George Thomas Collins (1839-1926) and his wife Ursula Flora McEachern (1843-1929). Alice was educated at the Methodist Ladies College, Elphin Road, Launceston. She won prizes each year from 1886 to 1889. She married Ernest McCaughan, of Glenmira, Victoria, on 10 May 1900 in a quiet wedding at the Church of Apostles, Launceston. Alice died at 'Shanghai', St Kilda Road, just three months later, on 15 Aug 1900, from peritonitis, aged 24 years. The couple were preparing to leave on a European tour just before Alice's death.
