Augusta Joanna May Champion was known by her second name. She was the daughter of Rev. Arthur Hammerton Champion (1859-) and Mary Celia Duncan (1861-1925) and was born on 9 Sep 1888 at the headmaster's residence of the Launceston Church Grammar School in Elizabeth Street. The family moved to Sydney in 1895.
Joan married Charles Matthew of Edinburgh in St Andrew’s Cathedral in Singapore. Charles died in May 1921 in Java. He was involved in the rubber trade and had rubber plantations.
Her second marriage was to Robert William Somerville. He died aged 62 on 16 December 1960 at Cirencester, Gloucestershire. Probate was granted to his wife, Augusta Joan May Somerville.
Joan had one son, Roger.
Joan published the novel ‘Incidental murder’ under the name Joan Champion while living in the UK. She died in 1969.
