Alexander Gordon Coulter was born in Launceston on 4 Oct 1876, the fifth child of James Coulter (1832-1907), superintendent of police, and his wife Christina Dean. His siblings were John Phayre, born 1868; James Dean, 1869; William Holmes, 1871 (also pictured in the Family Album); Ada Blanche, 1874 (married Alfred Bungey); Ellen Elizabeth, 1880 and Charles Mervyn, 1882.
Alexander was a watchmaker and in Sep 1894 he was a member of the Launceston Artillery. In 1907 he married Ida Minnie May Viney, the daughter of William Viney and Jemima Ann Robotham, farmers of Fingal. The wedding took place in Redfern, NSW, and their children, Christine and James, were born in 1908 and 1909. Alexander died on 2 Mar 1912 in Wentworth, NSW. His widow married Victor Cliff in 1915.
Alexander would have been about 15 when this photograph was taken. It is possible the image is of one of his older brothers, either John Phayre, born 1868 and died in Launceston in 1893, or James Dean, born 1869 and died in Malvern, Victoria, in 1900.
