Ernest William George Cartledge was born on 19 Jul 1881, the eighth of nine children born to George Cartledge and Caroline Powell (1845-1897) who were married on 8 Mar 1865. All of the children were born in Launceston. Ernest was educated at the Launceston High School. He married Florence Maud Joyce on 10 Apr 1907 at St Oswald's Church, Bain Terrace, Trevallyn. Their three children were born in Launceston: Joyce, 27 May 1908; Max, 16 Mar 1910 and Phil, 7 Apr 1919.
The Electoral Rolls provide a brief synopsis of Ernest's life: he was a bootseller before his marriage (1903); a shopkeeper when living at Delamere Road, Trevallyn (1914-19); became a salesman when living at 117 Cameron Street (1928) and might have retired to Gravelly Beach (1936). Ernest died on 29 Jul 1961 aged 80 at the Launceston General Hospital. His residence at the time was 28 Forest Road, Trevallyn. He was cremated at Carr Villa. Florence died just four days after her husband, on 2 Aug 1961.
