Lily Laidley Burrowes was born in Balmain, Sydney on 17 Jan 1875, the elder daughter of William Townsend Burrowes (1844-1908), civil engineer and surveyor, and Elizabeth Emily Gunn (1845-1919). Lily was christened on 5 Apr 1875 at either St Andrew's Anglican Church, Perth or St James' Anglican Church, Franklin Village. She attended the Methodist Ladies College, Elphin Road, gaining prizes from 1889 to 1893 at the annual speech days. Lily's older brother Louis is also in the Launceston Family Album. Her younger brother Cyril Winston was born in 1877 and sister Elsie Ella was born in 1879.
On 7 Mar 1909 Lily married a widower Lieut Alfred Ernest Salter Fennell, of the 81st Pioneers, the only son of Sydney Danvers Fennell. The marriage was held at the Holy Trinity Church in Meiktila, Burma, with the Rev. Evans-Price officiating. Lily's mother was living at 'The Laurels', Launceston at that time. Lily had a daughter, Winston, on 12 Jan 1910 at Underwood, Maymyo, Burma. Their second daughter Monica was born before 1916. After Lily's death Alfred married again in 1966, in Bromley, Kent, England to Doris Barendse. He died in Honiton, Devon in 1980, in his 99th year.
