Mrs Louisa Bruce was born about 1848 in Hertfordshire, England. Her parents were James Lewin (1824-1884) and Hannah Oldaker (1820-1912). The Lewin family migrated to Australia on the Monarch in 1859. Louisa married Thomas Bruce in Victoria about 1868. The family moved to Tasmania in about 1880, shortly before their son Leonard was born. Thomas was involved with the mining industry. He had been one of the partners in what was later known as the Briseis Company. He worked as mining manager for the Melbourne company which took over the original ground until the year before his death from cancer on 6 Jan 1890. He was 59 and left a widow with a large family.
Louisa died aged 91 on 21 May 1935. She was buried at Carr Villa in Section B15 No 89. Her children Maxwell, Sarah and Leonard are also pictured in the Family Album.
