Maxwell Arthur Bruce was born in Clunes, Victoria, in 1869, the eldest son of Thomas Bruce (c.1831-1890) and his wife Louisa Lewin (c.1848-1935). The family moved to Launceston in about 1880. Maxwell was employed by the National Bank. He married Mildred Mabel Florence Turner, a daughter of JSV Turner of Trevallyn, on 26 Jul 1898. Their first two children were born at Strahan: Thomas on 12 Dec 1899 and Stella on 7 Oct 1904. Maxwell was then transferred to Sheffield, where another two sons were born: Maxwell Leonard on 1 May 1908 and Joseph on 26 Aug 1910.
Maxwell was a bank manager in Sheffield until the mid to late 1920s. He died aged 60 at the Commercial Bank of Australia, Ivanhoe, Victoria, on 23 Sep 1929. He was privately interred at the Heidelberg Cemetery. Mildred returned to Tasmania and died on 2 Jul 1947 aged 70 and was buried at the Christ Church Cemetery at Longford.
