Leonard Stanthorpe Bruce was born in Launceston on 24 Jul 1880, the son of mine manager Thomas Bruce JP (c.1831-1890) and Louisa Lewin (c.1848-1935). Leonard was christened at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Launceston, when his parents were living at the Quadrant. He was nine years old when his father died in Jan 1890. He was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School.
Leonard worked for many years at the Government Tourist Bureau, including some time as manager. He was secretary of the Northern Tasmanian Tourist Association. Leonard was a Freemason, a member of the Lodge of Hope, a member of the Victorian Travel League and a Justice of the Peace. He died in Melbourne on 8 Sep 1940 at the age of 60.
