Thomas Bateman was born about 1844 in Moulton, Cheshire, England. He worked as a colliery manager in Bridgnorth St Leonard, Shropshire in 1881. He migrated to Australia with his family on the Iberia in May 1884. He was a commission agent at 24 Paterson Street, Launceston. Later his son Charles joined him as T Bateman & Son, mining and machine agents, 38 St John Street, Launceston. Thomas was initiated into the Lodge of Hope in 1886. He was a member of the Margaret Street Methodist Church, and a marble plaque was erected there in his memory. He died in London 13 Jun 1900. His wife and children Emily and Charles were still living in Launceston at that time. His wife and four children are also pictured in the Family Album. See The Examiner 15 Oct 2005, p.30.
