Charles Sherwin Barclay was born in Launceston on 26 Aug 1882 to James Francis Oliver Barclay (1841-1926) and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Sherwin (1844-1921). Charles attended the Launceston Church Grammar School from 1895, when he won the Form Prize, followed in 1896 with a drawing prize. He was apprenticed to J & T Gunn as a cabinet-maker prior to 1900.
In Feb 1908 Charles left from Sydney and sailed to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He evidently returned as he took up farming at Sassafras, back in Tasmania. His two children were born there: James in Mar 1912 and June in Apr 1916. Later he was in charge of hardware merchants John Danks & Son's maintenance department. By 1924 the family had moved to Hawthorn and later Kew, Victoria, where Charles worked as a salesman. He died in Kew in 1959.
