Ann Sword Wood Anderson was born in Dundee, Scotland on 31 Aug 1873. Her parents were James Smith Anderson (1845-1921), the manager of the Tasmanian Soap and Candle Company, and Mary Ann Shepherd Mitchell (1848-1920). Ann arrived in Launceston on 17 Oct 1884 with her mother, six brothers and two sisters. Her father had arrived earlier on 14 Feb 1884. Ann's mother Mary Ann and sister Elizabeth are also pictured in the Launceston Family Album.

Ann married James Mitchell on 7 Aug 1895 in Launceston. The couple moved to 'Badgawalla', Latrobe, where James was a storekeeper in Gilbert Street. Their six children were all born at Latrobe: James, 1896; Annie, 1897; Mary Ann, 1898; Helen, 1899, Robert, 1905 and Othniel, 1911. James died on 21 Feb 1933 and Ann died on 26 Mar 1947.
